THE FIRST ACT WORKSHOP
Gordy Hoffman
The Saturday Workshop in San Francisco has sold out and we have opened another workshop for registration on Sunday. We only have 5 spots open on Sunday.

Gordy is relocating to London and this will be his last workshop in America for awhile.

San Francisco
January 10th.
9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. SOLD OUT

January 11th.
9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

*Five Spots Available*

This workshop will consist of 8 writers each submitting the First Act of a work in progress in advance. We will go over each work individually, discussing specifically how the first act functions in a screenplay as the beginning of a story. This discussion will include the challenges of organic exposition, the introduction of compelling characters, and how the first act establishes completely why an audience will invest emotionally in your movie.

Each writer will submit their act approximately one week in advance of the workshop and will receive a short written reaction from Gordy alongside their participation in the workshop. Writers will be encouraged to exchange written feedback as well.

RED Clarifies it’s offerings… for awesomeness!

RED Digital Cinema has announced new specifications for the Scarlet and EPIC cameras. The new specifications increase the options and frame rates available to RED ONE levels for a lot less cash. In fact the new Scarlet S35 model outperforms the RED one in almost every category. The EPIC cameras have increased specs to boot, but the most impressive announcement is the EPIC-X a special RED ONE only upgrade that includes a “Brain” I/O, recording module, and batter module for the $28,000 grand price. For non-RED ONE owners, the BRAIN ONLY is $28,000. This applies for past and future RED ONE purchases.

Looking good. Can’t wait until Summer, which is later than originally though. Jim Jannard of RED has said they realize they are often “fashionably late,” but it will be worth the wait.

Also announced was the pricing of the 2/3″ with lens Scarlet, which is $3750 for a complete camera ready to shoot 3K footage up to 120fps, and 150fps burst. Sign me up for one of those and the S35 scarlet.

Meet Terry Nichols

The latest teaser clip for Exit Stage Left - The story of the Lowry Theater Company has been added to blip.tv

This clip shows the star of the play, Terry Nichols, and her, um, relationship with the director of the play, Ronny Simons.

Bluecat Screenplay Competition 2009

Bluecat screeplay
The Bluecat Screenplay Competition is accepting entries for the 2009 competition. There are just a few days left for the early deadline. I submitted a script last year and received valuable feedback about the characters, story and plot. I highly recommend this for someone with a finished screenplay that hasn’t received the attention you think it deserves.
Quote:
EARLY DEADLINE: December 1, 2008. Entry fee $50
All screenplays submitted by December 1 will receive their analysis by January 5.

RED Changes Everything…Again

Well, Jim at RED has stated everything has changed again. I’m thinking they are adjusting specifications and perhaps dropping one or two models from the line up.

December 3 will be the announcement.

RED Predictions Right and Wrong

RED Digital Cinema today announced the new Epic and Scarlet updates. They have blown away all speculation by almost everyone, with one exception: everyone. Scarlet and Epic are completely modular cameras that will satisfy almost everyone and in some way hit all of the speculation with 2 exceptions. First to my predictions.

SCARLET:
Scarlet will end up being a 3K (pixels) camera with an interchangeable lens. It will have a s35mm sized sensor and will effectively make RED ONE owners very upset. Cost will be $4,000-$8,000 without LENS. New PL lenses to follow, or 18-50 drops in price. Delivery in JUNE.
EDIT
After thinking about this more, I think there is going to be two ways RED will go. Either it will be Interchangeable Lens s16mm sensor sized 3K camera. OR Scarlet will be a 3K camera with a fixed lens and a s35mm sized sensor.

Scarlet is BOTH a 3K fixed lens camera, and a 3K interchangeable lens camera, and a 5K interchangeable lens camera AND a 6K Full frame interchangeable lens camera.

The two 3K cameras are both 2/3″ chip cameras, one with a built in lens, and another with a B4 or C mount interchangeable lens camera. The two big surprise for Scarlet is the 5K version that in all senses of the word, REPLACES the RED ONE and the 6K version. The 5K one is the version I will be buying first. On this one, my prediction was SPOT ON, including the RED ONE owners being very upset.

EPIC
Epic will stay a 5K camera using an s35mm sized sensor. It will cost $25,000 and the 17,500 credit will almost guarantee most people switch. This will calm down those RED owners how were so upset with the new Scarlet.
EDIT
Epic becomes a $30,000 5K camera.

Between my two predictions, this is spot on. $28,000 for the base EPIC head is right between 25 and 30 grand that I predicted. What I didn’t see was all of the rest of the cameras. 6K 9K, etc. I also did not see all of the new RED code options and accessories, etc.

INCREDIBLE!

RED ONE, EPIC, and Scarlet Speculation

I’m going on record here to put down some speculation. I know that these are mostly likely wrong, but this is the way I see it anyway.

RED ONE mkII
The RED ONE body will stay, but the sensor will be upgraded to the new model. It will stay 4K, but it will have the enhancements of the new Sensor. Cost will drop to $14,500 minus lens.
EDIT
Red one does not drop in price.

This of course is just speculation and I await for RED to announce the actual plans.

Eos 5D Mk II Video!

The video looks great, but the cost to produce this spot is not cheap. There is also GREAT cinematography in this piece. NOTICE the movement. Nothing quick, nothing really handheld, no quick pans, no pans of vertical objects. I want to see a test like the d90 shake and pan similar to the one linked in a previous post.

http://www.vincentlaforet.com/2008/09/22/without-further-ado-reverie/

It looks great on my computer screen, but what will it look like blown up to a movie theater. However the same question can be said of the HVX200 except this looks better.

I’m still wary of the h264 native recording of the camera. I’ll be renting it and testing however as soon as I can.

Scarlet Changes…For the Better?

http://www.scarletuser.com/showthread.php?t=1047

The RED Scarlet has just gone back to the drawing board. With the announcement of the DSMC (Digital Still and Motion Camera) and the Eos 5dmkII and the D90, RED has decided to go back to the drawing board with Scarlet.

What that means, we won’t know until they tell us. And even then it will probably change.
